What the app stores

Your preferences and practice summaries—such as sound, word, score, recognized text, language, and time—are stored locally on your device. Full-history versions keep scored recordings and their summaries without automatically deleting older entries to make room for newer ones. History appears in batches, and audio is loaded only for replay. Detailed acoustic arrays are kept for the newest 200 attempts for calibration. Listening-exam summaries retain the latest 200 results.

Earlier versions, including native builds shipped before the full-history update, keep at most 200 practice summaries and 60 recordings. This update cannot restore recordings those versions already deleted. Recording retention is still subject to available device/browser storage; save failures are shown, and if permanent audio storage is unavailable a recording may be available for the current session only. Clearing app data or browser storage removes recordings. The saved take library is not uploaded. A newly recorded attempt may be processed for recognition as described below.

Update reminders

Versions with update reminders may check a small public version file on l-and-n.lazying.art. The request does not include your recordings, recognized text, installed version, device identifier, or account information. You can dismiss a reminder and keep practising. Native updates are installed through the App Store or Google Play; web updates refresh the app without clearing saved history.

How speech is analyzed

In the iOS and watchOS apps, recognition is requested through the operating system’s speech services, not an L & N server. Your device and platform settings determine whether the operating system performs recognition on-device or through its own service. Android versions up to 1.0.8 also used the operating system’s speech service.

Starting with Android 1.0.9, word recognition uses L & N’s private transcription service only after you explicitly enable “Allow online word recognition” and tap Record. The short recording is sent over encrypted HTTPS to recognize the word, then discarded from the service. It is not retained, shared for advertising, or used to train a model. Internet access is required. You can withdraw consent with the same checkbox; listening exercises and lessons remain available without online recognition. If no word is recognized, Android shows the captured waveform but does not judge L/N or save a pronunciation score.

In supported browsers, L & N normally requests the browser’s speech-recognition feature. Whether that recognition runs on-device or through the browser or platform provider is controlled by that browser and platform. On iPhone and iPad web, the app avoids running a second recognizer beside the recorder so that one microphone stream can reliably supply the visible waveform.

When browser recognition is unavailable, fails, or returns no usable text—including the iPhone and iPad web path—the web app may send the user-started short recording over encrypted HTTPS to the same-origin private transcription service after recording stops. It is used only to return that attempt’s text, then discarded. It is not retained or used to train a model. Existing web and iOS versions may show a lower-confidence acoustic estimate when word recognition is unavailable; that estimate is not a recognized word.

What we do not collect

• No account, name, email address, contacts, or precise location.
• No advertising identifiers, cross-app tracking, or behavioral analytics.
• No voice recordings or voiceprints stored anywhere except on your own device, and no voiceprints at all.
• No sale or sharing of personal data for advertising.

Permissions

Microphone access is used only when you tap Record. Speech-recognition access may be requested on supported Apple platforms. You can revoke these permissions at any time in system settings.

Retention and deletion

Practice summaries remain on the device until you clear the app’s site data, remove the app, or reset its storage. Transient transcription audio is discarded after processing. Infrastructure security logs may contain technical metadata such as timestamps and status codes, but not the recording body or recognized words.

Children and health

L & N is an educational practice tool, not a medical device or a substitute for a speech-language pathologist. A parent or guardian should supervise a child’s use and the device’s permission settings.
